Slated to be up and running by , the undertaking allowed archaeologists to take an unprecedented peek at swathes of subterranean London, and yielded plenty of cool historic treasures from various periods. Here’s a small sampling of the finds. Scientists analyzed the remains and discovered that some of them belonged to victims of the Black Death—a. Teeth contained traces of DNA from the plague bacterium Yersinia pestis, and radio-carbon dating indicated that the burial ground had been used during two outbreaks of plague, one from to and another during the s. The skeletons also showed signs of poor diets and hard lifestyles, which might have been contributing factors for why Londoners were so susceptible to the plague. But the so-called plague pit didn’t just contain those who’d succumbed to disease. Not only were some bodies plague-free, “what they found was, not bodies tumbled together as they’d expected, but rather orderly burials with people laid in rows with their bodies orientated in one direction,” historian Gillian Tindall told The Guardian. The encampment had traces of campfires and flint scatters, and experts recovered pieces of flint, including an year-old stone tool. The concentration of flint pieces shows that this was an exceptionally important location for sourcing materials to make tools that were used by early Londoners who lived and hunted on Thames Estuary islands. The waste hole was filled with tobacco pipes and fragments of pots, including a raunchy Victorian chamber pot.

Four decades of guitars from Czechoslovakia. When I wrote my original article about Eastern European guitars [Guitars of the Cold War, Vintage Guitar Magazine, January ], I was still in the process of researching the roots of these instruments. In the first two installments, I had focused on Russia almost exclusively, though I did mention Jolana guitars briefly. Since then, a lot of new information has come to light, enough to dedicate this third installment of “Guitars Of The Cold War” exclusively to guitars built in Czechoslovakia.
Again dating does not seem to be possible with these pots. Guitars by Vox, Eko and Hagstrom all used Lesa potentiometers. CTS pots as fitted to a Gibson Melody Maker.
It is an opportunity for us to reflect on the language and ideas that represented each year. So, take a stroll down memory lane to remember all of our past Word of the Year selections. Change It wasn’t trendy , funny, nor was it coined on Twitter , but we thought change told a real story about how our users defined Unlike in , change was no longer a campaign slogan. But, the term still held a lot of weight. Here’s an excerpt from our Word of the Year announcement in The national debate can arguably be summarized by the question: In the past two years, has there been enough change?
Has there been too much? Meanwhile, many Americans continue to face change in their homes, bank accounts and jobs. Only time will tell if the latest wave of change Americans voted for in the midterm elections will result in a negative or positive outcome. Tergiversate This rare word was chosen to represent because it described so much of the world around us.
Accurately dating 70’s Gibsons?
With all the fat, sweet, snarling Les Paul tone that purists love, the Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro IV sports a mahogany body with a thick maple cap for the perfect blend of warmth and clarity. The top is finished in high-gloss lacquer, while the back, sides and neck have a smooth satin finish that feels great and lets the wood resonate fully. Period-Correct Pickguard The cream-colored pickguard has been a Les Paul staple dating back to the models of the late s and the early s.
Many players, however, removed the pickguard from their Les Pauls to show off the beauty of the flame maple tops, prompting Gibson to stop installing the pickguard altogether.
Dating Guitars – Pot Codes. by Rik a movie, of course For my first blog post on dating instruments, I’d thought I’d talk about potentiometer or, “Pot” codes which can be used to help date almost all electric instruments, amplifiers, and effects pedals made in the U.S, as well as many in Europe, etc. The Pots are the small parts.

Like the Custom 24 “Killer Quilt” below, it features a mix of gold and nickel hardware. Some general info about the Santana: It has Carlos’s favorite fat, wide mahogany neck and fret fingerboard, and features classic PRS birds. It also has a thick maple cap, instead of simply a veneer like most of the competition, and it’s the marriage of the mahogany body and maple cap that gives this guitar its superb tone. On top of the maple cap PRS uses highly figured maple for visual appeal.
Some of you will remember I had this same model in Slate Black 8 months ago. PRS sourced some of this “killer quilt” in and did a limited run of of these US, 80 overseas. Finished in “Matteo Mist”, it is some of the nicest bookmatched quilt I’ve ever seen. The quilted maple caps off a korina body, rather than the usual mahogany, and it has the Artist treatment with bird inlays, gold hardware, rosewood headstock overlay and inlaid shell logo.
A History: ’s Word of the Year
In the early days he followed the tradition of Syd, using different slide techniques to create effects and soundscapes. Among these were a Fender pedal steel. The guitar has two necks with 8 strings on each David most likely used only 6 of them , Fender humbucker pickups, tone and volume knob and a neck selector switch as well as 10 pedals. However, David never used these and they were later taken off as seen in the DSotM documentary. The was first used for the recording of One of These Days Meddle I went off to Sound City, which was the in place to go in the west of London, and they had two Jedsons, a blonde one and a red one.
When dating an instrument by the ‘pot code,’ keep two things in mind: The potentiometers must be original to the piece (new solder, or a date code that is off by ten or more years is a good giveaway to spot replacement pots); and the pot code only indicates when the potentiometer was manufactured!

Return to the Main Index. Sometimes there just isn’t enough information on electric instruments and amps to allow them to be properely dated. And many people ask me to try and determine the year of their old amplifier, or to help them with the year of their older off-brand electric guitar. Since I primarily collect amps by Fender, and guitars by Gibson, Fender, Martin, National, Epiphone, Gretsch and Rickenbacker, I really can’t help them with these other less popular brands.
As you have probably noticed, there is plenty of information here to help date the brands that I am interested in. But where does that leave everyone else?
Whereas Martin guitars have been using a single, consistent numbering system since the 19th century, Gibson has used several different serial number formats since its inception in , meaning that some formats and numbers overlap across decades.

Robbie Cube I think Chris Spedding’s Sharks were the first up, but that was a long time ago, and my memories of that night may have been somewhat I think Aerosmith came on second, touring on “Get Your Wings” – they were already gaining some noteriety, while Sharks never made much of a dent in the US market, and by this point Andy Fraser had already left the band, replaced by one Buster Cherry Jones I will assume that wasn’t his given name!
From what I’ve read, The Sharks broke up in early , with singer Snips joining Baker-Gurvitz Army, and guitarist Chris Spedding puting out solo albums and getting involved in both the punk and rockabilly movements. This was my first show at The Aragon as well.

Although they are iconic symbols of rock guitar today, even the Flying V and Explorer were too far ahead of their time in the late ’50s, and fewer than units of both types were made in their original three-year run before deletion from the catalog in
