For an idea of the pigments used by Michelangelo in his Sistine Chapel murals, see: His nickname – il divino, the divine one – was an apt illustration of his exceptional gifts as a painter, sculptor, architect and engineer. Twenty years younger than his rival Leonardo da Vinci and eight years older than his rival Raphael , his extraordinary diversity of talent made him one of the great inspirational forces behind the High Renaissance. He reinvigorated the classical idea that the nude human body is a sufficient vehicle for the expression of all emotions which a painter can depict, a notion that had an enormous influence on the subsequent development of Academic art – and on art as a whole. Above all, he promoted the idea that painting and sculpture merited the same status as architecture, and that painters and sculptors were real artists, rather than mere decorators or stone masons. Michelangelo’s creative output has made him one of the most scrutinized artists of the Italian Renaissance , responsible for some of the greatest Renaissance paintings and also for several of the world’s greatest sculptures. Several of his works, notably his statues Pieta and David, and his Genesis and Last Judgment frescos in the Sistine Chapel in Rome – are regarded as some of the most influential artistic accomplishments in the history of art. His place among the best artists of all time is assured. Biography In , after the death of his patron, Lorenzo de’ Medici, the 17 year old Michelangelo moved to Bologna, and, in , to Rome. There he carved the first of his great masterpieces of Italian Renaissance sculpture , the St Peter’s Pieta, which was completed at the turn of the century.

Philosophy of History

Ancient through Medieval The attempt to derive meaning from the past is as old as culture itself. The very notion of a culture depends upon a belief in a common history that members of that culture recognize themselves as meaningfully sharing. Arguably the first scientific philosophy of history—which is characterized by an attempt to be non-biased, testimony-based, comprehensive, and unencumbered by grand predictive structures— was produced by the father of history, Herodotus c.

But what he sacrifices in confirmable fact he makes up for in the descriptive vividness of everyday life. All stories, however preposterous, are recorded without moral judgment since they each reflect the beliefs of a time and of a people, all of which are worth knowing.

Hellenistic Monarchs down to the Roman Empire. The Hellenistic Age suffers from some of the same disabilities as Late Antiquity, i.e. it doesn’t measure up to the brilliance of the Golden Age of Greece and of late Republican and early Imperial Rome.

Olympia by Manet The naked and the nude[ edit ] While there is no single definition of fine art, there are certain generally accepted features of most definitions. In the fine arts, the subject is not merely copied from nature, but transformed by the artist into an aesthetic object, usually without significant utilitarian, commercial advertising , illustration , or purely decorative purposes. There is also a judgement of taste; the fine art nude being part of high culture rather than middle brow or low culture.

During most of the twentieth century, the depiction of human beauty was of little interest to modernists, who were concerned instead with the creation of beauty through formal means. The introductory chapter makes the most often-quoted distinction [54] between the naked body and the nude. Clark states that to be naked is to be deprived of clothes, and implies embarrassment and shame, while a nude, as a work of art, has no such connotations.

This separation of the artistic form from the social and cultural issues remains largely unexamined by classical art historians. One of the defining characteristics of the modern era in art is the blurring of the line between the naked and the nude. This likely first occurred with the painting The Nude Maya by Goya, which in drew the attention of the Spanish Inquisition. Goya then painted another version, with clothes.

Some of the same characteristics were shocking almost 70 years later when Manet exhibited his Olympia , not because of religious issues, but because of its modernity. Rather than being a timeless Odalisque that could be safely viewed with detachment, Manet’s image was of a prostitute of that time, perhaps referencing the male viewers’ own sexual practices. Some individuals judge any public display of the unclothed body to be unacceptable, [62] while others may find artistic merit in explicitly sexual images.

Classical scholarship, the study, in all its aspects, of ancient Greece and continental Europe the field is known as “classical philology,” but the use, in some circles, of “philology” to denote the study of language and literature—the result of abbreviating the 19th-century “comparative philology”—has lent an unfortunate ambiguity to the term.

From Body Positive November There is a relatively new phenomenon sweeping the current social scene: Dating seems to be appealing to increasing numbers of gay men as evidenced by standing room-only crowds at an event dedicated to dating held at the lesbian and gay community center on a recent saturday night. These days, of course, it is not only a gay men’s health crisis, but one that affects increasing numbers of heterosexual men and women, and lesbians.

Dating‘s popularity seems to be a backlash from the carefree, promiscuous, and often anonymous sex days of the s and s. During these periods of time the virus seemed to be spreading almost unchecked as a result of the permissive lifestyle led by many gay men. In the s, however, women, heterosexuals, and people of color have the fastest growing rates of infection.

The line of thinking about dating is that it might be the best way to explore and develop healthy relationships. Since dating has always been a tradition in mainstream culture, heterosexuals and bisexuals have had a head start on it while lesbians and gay men are catching up on learning the ins and outs of it. For the experienced dater or the novice, there are trials and tribulations involved.

Manly Knowledge The Basics of Art: When a man goes to college these days, he spends his time learning the skills that will allow him to seek gainful employment. Little time is spent studying art or literature. On top of that, many men see art appreciation as wussy and effeminate and thus steer clear of it. Art can capture the emotions of the human experience when words fail us, give us insight into positive madness , expand our minds, and help us learn more about the world and ourselves.

In this dark period Europeans sought a new start, a cultural rebirth, a renaissance.

From the movement came some of the finest music, literature, and art of the twentieth century. At the end of World War I, black veterans returning to their southern homelands found little change. Despite having served their country, they were afforded no special recognition for their sacrifices and were faced with the same poor living conditions and threats of lynchings and public humiliation that existed before the war. Meanwhile, urban areas in the North and West had profited somewhat from the war with an upswing in new industries.

In addition, the decline in immigration from Europe had created a severe labor shortage, which opened up employment opportunities. In search of economic stability, better lives, and better education for their children, African Americans left the South for industrial centers such as Pittsburgh and Detroit and for cities such as Chicago and New York City. The greatest number of African Americans went to New York City, which had always been a cultural mecca and already had a large black population in Harlem.

This influx brought problems. Established residents did not embrace the change, seeing the newcomers as interlopers who would try to take their jobs. Eventually, the wide variety of people from different backgrounds provided opportunities for cultural growth and diversity. Harlem had already been a center for political activism, where silent marches—and some louder ones—protesting injustice had taken place. Du Bois, both provided avenues for sharing ideas.

Many writers had come to Harlem intending to turn the lives of migrants into novels and short stories. Alone, these writers might not have created the Renaissance community.

Literature[ edit ] William Shakespeare , chief figure of the English Renaissance, as portrayed in the Chandos portrait artist and authenticity not confirmed. England had a strong tradition of literature in the English vernacular , which gradually increased as English use of the printing press became common during the mid 16th century. Typically, the works of these playwrights and poets circulated in manuscript form for some time before they were published, and above all the plays of English Renaissance theatre were the outstanding legacy of the period.

The works of this period are also affected by Henry VIII’s declaration of independence from the Catholic Church and technological advances in sailing and cartography, which are reflected in the generally nonreligious themes and various shipwreck adventures of Shakespeare.

From High Renaissance to Mannerism. Michelangelo’s two famous Sistine Chapel frescoes (The Genesis fresco, and The Last Judgment fresco), were a study in contrasts. We date historical woods of three monumental buildings in Extremadura western Spain using dendroarchaeology. Abstract The absence of precise dates in Extremadura’s Renaissance heritage can generate ambiguities that hinder the cultural interpretation of regional history. The analysis of the duration of the art styles, the date of construction of buildings and artefacts or the exact determination of restoration periods are severely affected by the absence of specific chronological information.

Dendrochronology can help to resolve these unknowns. We analysed historical woods from timbers, painting panelings, ceilings, furniture and art objects, all from two Renaissance monumental buildings: We used a local chronology of living trees as reference. This living chronology was developed with tree-ring data hosted in the International Tree Ring Data Bank ITRDB but reinforced with recent wood samplings from the Sierra de Gredos, a mountainous area close to the historic sites.

After a step-by-step crossdating process, the historical timbers were dated and a floating chronology was built. The comparison between this floating chronology and that obtained from living trees reached a Pearson-r correlation of 0. Thus the living tree-ring chronology was extended years into the past from CE to CE , allowing the dating of new historical materials that may arise in the future for this period and confirming that tree-ring dating is a feasible technique to use in the dating of historic buildings and artefacts in western Spain.
